What I've found is that a "scrobbler" has been written for VLC in Python:
If some talented programmer could create an Eventghost Trakt.tv plugin, then potentially any video player that has an Eventghost plugin (such as MPC-HC) could also then update a trakt.tv account with shows that have been watched.

this i think would be a far better solution. as it is not written to interface with a specific program.and it is also still being developed all fo the others i have found have not been touched in 2+ years
what exactly are you looking to specifically do?
Going into configure item, you would have a button that would generate a code, which you could then enter into http://trakt.tv/activate, and the plugin would then be registered with trakt.tv.
If for instance one were using MPC-HC, you would have the MPC-HC plugin also running in Eventghost.
When the event below appears:
this would trigger an action of the trakt.tv plugin, where the currently playing show is recorded.MPC-HC.NowPlaying [u'', u'', u'', u'E:\\Media\\TV Shows\\A TV Show\\Season 1\\TV Show Name - 1x01 - Episode 1.mkv', u'2931.394']
When an event occurs indicating that the TV show has finished:
this would trigger an action where a pop-up window requests a rating for the TV Show, and when received the rating and the fact that the TV show has been watched are communicated to Trakt.tv.MPC-HC.Playstate.Stop
